In late 1932, Mr. Blaisdell decides to reconstruct the Austrian lighter.  First, he notes what obviously does and doesn’t work on the existing design of the lighter. Back then, lighters required the use of two hands to operate and their thin metal surface was easily dented. So he opts to fabricate a small rectangular case and attach a lid with a hinge.  Preserving the chimney design which protected the flame, the result is an attractive lighter that was easily operated with one hand. To this day, the design remains the same, and become iconic to the Zippo name.
